‘KALAMANDIR’ – Achieving unprecedented feats

“Yatho Hastha Thatho Drishti

  Yatho Drishti Thatho Manah

  Yatho Manah Thatho Bhava

  Yatho Bhava Thatho Rasa”

Ever since her childhood, all she saw and experienced was a life full of isolation in an orphanage. Leading a life of despondence, she dreamt of a world filled with ‘Bhava’, ‘Thala’, ‘Laya’ and ‘Rasa’ – the colourful world of Dance; the embodiment of rhythmic moves. Inspite of all her tribulations, she embarked on a journey holding her passion tight in her arms. Thankfully, with a world filled with open-minded and welcoming people, she got her entry in the Kala Mandal where she mastered the art under the mentorship of eminent dance aficionados. The confidence, courage and perseverance moulded the ‘dancer’ in her.

Today she has become a renowned “classical dancer”, the dynamic and vibrant Sindhu teacher of Kalamandir School of Dance, the only Kalakshetra in Thiruvananthapuram city where Sindhu trains thousands of young talents. The Kalamandir School of Dance was started with a strength of 2-3 children at Sasthamangalam in Trivandrum. Though Sindhu had to make both her ends meet, only on her sole income from teaching dance, she never saw art as a business. Amidst all the challenges she could face, she taught the most destitute children without charging a single penny. Her vision was that no child should be left without learning art because of lack of finances. Keeping this in view, the costume, accessories required for dance were provided by her at a very low cost.

At Kalamandir, every child gets one-to-one attention and the teacher takes special care by understanding the shortcomings of her children, which was evident during the Covid pandemic. Infact, Kalamandir School of Dance was rather a home to her students. Most of her students have won innumerable prizes in the school and college youth festival which adds a feather to her cap.

Unlike other dance teachers, she prepares around 11 stages for her children in a year, inside and outside Kerala, which gave an exposure to her students and satisfaction to their parents. Amidst her busy schedule, she finds enough time to upload her students’ dance performances in YouTube channels and other social media platforms. Kalamandir school provides offline and online classes to both the children as well as adults. She has to her credit a good number of housewives and colleagues as students. Along with many artistic talents, the teacher has also produced film as well serial stars.

Facing and coping with several challenges, Kalamandir continues its triumphant journey and was able to start one more branch last year in the capital city where students learn and enjoy dance at a minimal fee.

Currently Sindhu works as a dance teacher at Sarvodaya Central Vidyalaya, a prominent CBSE school in Thiruvananthapuram.

Though she lost her brother in 2022 (an employee of KSEB) who was her only pillar of support, Sindhu is forging ahead with the support of her colleagues, students and their parents. She firmly believes that sincerity and dedication are the keys to master any artform and if we have few sincere people to support us, then any art can be preserved.
